Denmark and Belgium to open embassies in Albania in 2026

Denmark and Belgium are the two countries that will open their embassies in Tirana in 2026.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has informed the Foreign Policy Committee that Denmark will open new embassies in Argentina and Albania in 2026.

The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the opening of the embassy in Tirana will enable support for Albania's aspirations for membership in the European Union and strengthening the country's stability, including protection from harmful external influences.

"The world is changing rapidly. This brings new challenges, but also great opportunities. We need to have a strong and modern foreign service, present in countries where our core interests are at risk," Rasmussen declared.

Denmark's decision also reflects its ambition to build new partnerships in the region and to strengthen political and economic cooperation with Albania.

Meanwhile, in November, Belgium also announced that it will open its embassy in Tirana, while closing eight diplomatic missions as part of a major restructuring of its foreign representation that aims to make the country's diplomatic network "broader, more resilient and future-oriented" .

Diplomatic relations between Albania and Belgium were established in 1924.

According to official data from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania, diplomatic relations between Albania and Belgium were established in 1924 and continued during the period of King Zog, only to be interrupted during World War II.

After 1945, contacts between the countries were sporadic and after the beginning of the 90s, relations between the two countries, according to the ministry, "had a stable development in all areas of mutual interest."

Albanian authorities describe the bilateral political relations between Albania and Belgium as "very good".
