The EU responds to Albin Kurti and Edi Rama for the Hague decision: Show restraint!
The European Union has responded to the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, regarding their reactions to the sentencing of the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, with the head of the Kosovo government describing the decision as injustice, while Rama described it as "stupid".
The spokesperson for the European Commission for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Christian Wigand, said that the Specialist Chambers deliver justice by conducting fair, impartial and independent judicial proceedings.
“Look, what I can say on this issue is that the European Union takes note of the first instance judgment in the case of the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim and Jakup Krasniqi. The Kosovo Specialist Chambers deliver justice by conducting fair, impartial and independent judicial proceedings, based on the principle of individual criminal responsibility.
"The convicted persons, of course, have the right to appeal the verdict before independent appellate judges, in a special appellate panel. The EU calls on all parties and actors in Kosovo and the region to show restraint," said Wigand.
He also stated that it remains essential to promote an environment free from fear and retaliation, as well as to protect victims and witnesses.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the European Commission for Enlargement, Guillaume Mercier, referred to the words of the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, saying that the judgments of the Specialist Chambers must be respected and that convicted persons have the right to appeal those judgments.
“The Kosovo Specialist Chambers are an impartial and independent judicial body. Their verdicts must be respected and convicted persons have the right to appeal. This is about individual accountability and justice for victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo.
"We call on actors in the region to help heal the wounds of the past. Only through reconciliation can the countries of the region overcome their divisions and move forward towards a common future, towards the European Union," he said.
On September 16, the Special Court issued a first-instance decision that Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi be sentenced to 25 years in prison each, Kadri Veseli to 18 and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years.
