OBSERVATION/ Edi Rama's Albania, the poorest country in Europe that sells oil for $2.8 per liter

According to GlobalPetrolPrices, the average price of diesel worldwide is $1.62 per liter. As a rule, richer countries have higher prices, while poorer countries, as well as those that produce and export oil, have significantly lower prices.

All countries have access to the same oil prices on international markets, but then each country applies different taxes, which increases the final price.

Based on the latest data published by the internationally recognized platform GlobalPetrolPrices, on September 7, 2026, Venezuela and Iran were selling oil cheaper than any other country. The price at the points of sale was only $0.004 and $0.006 per liter!

Libya had a price of $0.024/liter, while Algeria, Kuwait, and Egypt sold it at prices ranging from $0.233 to $0.400/liter.

In Saudi Arabia the price was slightly higher, at $0.477. Moving on to Europe, we see that Turkey has the cheapest oil at $1.834 per liter, while Moldova and Poland are still resisting the pressure, selling it for under $2.

In Greece, the average oil price – always according to the international platform – was $2,387 per liter; this price was lower than in Portugal, Italy, Belgium, France and Germany, but higher than in Spain, Sweden, Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus and Bulgaria.

Albania stands out the most. The country, which according to INSTAT had an average salary of 92,150 lek, or about 1,000 euros per month (880 euros net) – ranks alongside powerful economies like Singapore and Switzerland, selling oil for $2,760 per liter.

This is one of the highest prices in the world, with Albania ranked eighth in the world for the most expensive oil. For your information, Hong Kong tops the list with almost $4.7 per liter.
