They created an illegal parking scheme in Naples/ 24 Camorra mafia members arrested in Italy

24 suspected members of the Camorra group, the notorious Neapolitan mafia, have been detained by Italian police on charges of drug trafficking, weapons possession and creating an illegal parking scheme.
According to investigators, some of those arrested were linked to well-known Camorra families operating in the Fuorigrotta and Chiaia districts of Naples.
Investigators said the Troncone and Frizziero clans, in addition to being involved in drug trafficking and cigarette smuggling, were behind a parking scheme in which drivers felt compelled to pay additional fees in order to ensure their vehicles remained intact when parked.
The practice is widespread in southern Italy and, according to a report by the Green-Left Alliance political group, there are around 2,400 illegal parking lots operating in Naples alone. Many of them are thought to be linked to the Camorra clans and the illegal trade is suspected of generating more than €100 million a year.
In other areas, unauthorized escorts are forced to pay money in order to be allowed to operate within mafia-controlled territories, The Guardian reports .
“ Illegal parking essentially requires a protection fee, a pizza from drivers ,” said Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of parliament for the Alliance of the Greens and the Left.
" If you refuse, you will be threatened, your car may be damaged or, even worse, you may be physically attacked ," added Borrelli, who claimed that on one occasion, he himself fell victim to such an attack.
The MP requested that the law be amended so that "acting as an unauthorized parking attendant is considered a criminal offense."
