Days after taking office, Canadian PM invites Zelensky to attend G7 summit in

Canada, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7 this year, has invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the next summit, which will be held in June in Alberta, western Canada.

"Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who took office on Friday, spoke with Zelensky and invited him to the G7 summit in June in Alberta ," a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

The Ukrainian president noted in a post on X that he had “a good conversation with Carney ,” saying that the latter “ made the right points about the need to increase pressure on Moscow,” but the Ukrainian president did not mention that he had received an invitation to attend this year’s Group of Seven summit.

For his part, the new Canadian prime minister reiterated that his country strongly supports Ukraine's fight for freedom against Russian aggression. " A lasting peace in Ukraine contributes to the security of all of us,"  he said.

Last week, the G7 reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its territorial integrity and threatened Russia with new sanctions after a meeting of foreign ministers of G7 member countries.
