"Prices will increase", businesses against open energy market

Around 100 businesses, mainly from the manufacturing sector, met on Monday with representatives of the Energy Regulatory Office following warnings about the liberalization of the energy market.
After the announcement of a 15% increase in energy prices, it was decided that all companies with over 50 employees or a turnover of over 10 million euros would enter the open energy market from June 1. This measure means that businesses must choose their own electricity supplier.
Businesses requested that this decision be postponed for at least a year, in order to prepare for the changes, or otherwise be subsidized by the state.
This measure also warned of an increase in product prices, as they say that the price of energy on the open market will be more expensive than it currently is.
"The market entry is expected to also increase the price of electricity, which will have a chain effect on the producer, increasing the cost of production or the cost of the product, which will then be passed on to the consumer, and our product within the Kosovo market will not be competitive with imported products as it has been until now, but will be more expensive than the imported product," says Lulëzim Rafuna, Kosovo Chamber of Commerce.
This decision is expected to affect around 1,300 businesses, 61 of which are due to the number of employees and the rest due to the amount of turnover.
Kosovo, which has not yet reached the 1 billion mark in exports, imports up to 6 billion euros and this decision is seen as a blow to local producers, who will be in a difficult position to export products to foreign markets.
Businesses, which are not against the open market, demand that the formula be changed and that only the companies that spend the most enter the open market.
"We think that based on the amount spent, the 50 employee criterion should be removed, the amount of turnover over 10 million should also be removed, but it should be with expenses," said Lulëzim Rafuna, Kosovo Chamber of Commerce.
In Kosovo, according to ERO, there are 19 electricity suppliers, while businesses also have the right to choose licensed suppliers from Albania and North Macedonia due to agreements between the countries that enable them to provide services without barriers.
Currently, for household and commercial consumers who consume up to 800 kilowatt hours per month, the price of electricity during the day is 7.79 cents per kilowatt, while for those who consume more than 800 kilowatts, the portion above this is calculated at a price of 14.45 cents. (A2 Television)
