Protests return in Serbia, students fill streets against government pressure on

Thousands of Serbian students and activists protested in Novi Pazar on Sunday against what they call government pressure on state universities.

The demonstration, part of a wider movement against political interference in higher education, was the first of its kind in Novi Pazar, and one of many organized after the collapse of the roof of a railway station last year in the northern city of Novi Sad, where 16 people lost their lives.

The protest with the slogan “Either them or us” ended at dinner after 8 hours. The protest began in front of the State University, and then the participants moved through the streets of the city and ended in the City Square.

During the protest, a series of forums and speeches were held by students and professors, as well as guests from other universities in Serbia. During the day, participants blocked several city streets and highways, and after the program ended, they dispersed peacefully.

The protest was organized because more than 200 university students in that city lost their student status and about 30 professors lost their jobs. The students claim that the university is “systematically collapsing.”
