White House: It is impossible for the US to return the Statue of Liberty to France

White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said today, regarding French politician Raphael Glucksmann's request that the US return the Statue of Liberty, that this is absolutely impossible.
Leavitt said she could only remind Glucksmann, whom she called a low-ranking French politician, that the French currently do not speak German only because of aid from the United States, the Voice of Florida reported.
"So they should be very grateful for our great country," Leavitt said.
Her statement alludes to the US role in the liberation of France during World War II, particularly through the Normandy landings in 1944.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States in 1886, on the occasion of the centennial of American independence and as a symbol of friendship between the two nations.
The construction of the Statue of Liberty was partially funded by the citizens of France, while Americans raised money for the pedestal.
Since its installation on Liberty Island in New York, it has become a universal symbol of freedom and welcome for migrants.
