During a joint press conference with the French president, US President Donald Trump said that Europe must take a central role in ensuring Ukraine's long-term security.

Recall that last week, Russian and American delegations met in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss establishing peace in Ukraine. However, representatives from Ukraine and the European Union were absent from the table.
This caused anger in Ukraine and Kiev, but with recent statements, it seems that Trump is willing to include Europe in the peace negotiations.
Trump also spoke of his desire to "recover the colossal amount of money" the US has spent on Ukraine, saying it has spent more than $300 billion (£237.5 billion).
For this reason, Trump said that the US "must reach a deal with Ukraine on rare earth minerals."
Donald Trump previously stated that the United States is close to reaching a minerals deal with Ukraine.
President Trump made the comments while hosting French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House for talks that focused on the prospect of ending the war in Ukraine amid strong differences over how to go about that goal.
Responding to reporters' questions, President Trump said the deal was "very close." He said he could meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later this week or next week to sign the agreement.
“He could come this week or next week to sign the deal, that would be a good thing,” Trump said of Zelensky. He added that he would also meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at some point.
For his part, Macron said that Europe was prepared to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, including peacekeeping troops, in the event of a ceasefire.
President Trump said that the United States supports the idea of sending European peacekeeping troops and said that he had raised the issue with Mr. Putin and the latter had agreed to accept it.
