A 36-year-old man of Albanian origin, identified as Gjovalin Lazri, was killed overnight in Baldissero d'Alba, in the province of Cuneo, Italy.
According to preliminary investigations, Lazri is suspected of being part of a group of at least five people who had gone to a construction site with the intention of stealing materials. The group is suspected of having entered the property of 35-year-old Roberto Mollo, where construction materials, equipment and tools had been collected.
Mollo, who was alone at the scene, is said to have heard noises during the night and picked up the gun. According to a preliminary reconstruction of the incident, he fired several shots at people outside.
While the other members of the group are suspected to have fled, Lazri was hit by gunfire. Despite the intervention of emergency teams, the 36-year-old did not survive.
The 36-year-old lived in Turin with his family.
Gjovalin Lazri was originally from Albania, but had been living in Turin, on the outskirts of the city, for years, together with his partner and their child. According to the family's lawyer, Roberta Sisimbro, the victim's relatives are shocked by the incident.
Lazri had previous convictions for property crimes, but his family lawyer said he was trying to return to a normal life and was working regularly. He ran a bar on Corso Taranto in Turin, where he lived with his family.
Roberto Mollo under investigation for murder
Roberto Mollo, 35, the owner of a transport company, is currently under investigation for premeditated murder. The gun he used was registered and legally owned, but according to authorities, he should not have kept it outside his apartment.
Mollo stated that he was at the construction site to store construction materials, worth several thousand euros. Among them were tiles, cement, slabs, work tools and scaffolding.
Investigators suspect the group arrived around 2:30 a.m. to commit the robbery. However, not enough evidence has been found to fully document the group's movements.
The investigations are being led by the Bra Carabinieri and the Cuneo Operational Unit. The area where the incident occurred has been isolated, and there are no security cameras that could help fully elucidate the dynamics.
Meanwhile, investigators have taken testimony from residents of the area to reconstruct the moments before and after the shooting.
