Albanian politicians on the US blacklist for interference with justice

The case of the deputy prime minister of North Macedonia, Artan Grubi, who has been accused of interfering in the judicial system to favor one of his subjects, is not the only one being punished by the United States of America. Several Albanian politicians, involved in similar interventions, have ended up on the radar of the American secret services.

According to the sources provided by the investigations in Skopje, the cases related to political interference in Albanian justice extend from the period of the former Prosecutor General, Adriatik Llalla, to the most recent decisions related to the conflicts over the seal of the Democratic Party.

A source close to the investigations has revealed that two politicians, an oligarch and a former police officer were involved in these cases. These individuals are suspected of illegally influencing Sali Berisha, declared "non grata" by the US for corruption and undermining democracy.

"The investigations started in March 2022, when a judge who was dealing with a case related to Berisha asked to leave due to a conflict of interest. However, the intervention of a politician close to Berisha made the judge continue to deal with this case," said the source. According to him, the same politician, in cooperation with a powerful businessman connected to the prime minister and another majority politician, exerted illegal influence on the Court of Appeal to favor Berisha.

The US investigative operation is not limited to Albania, but has also been extended to Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro, as part of efforts to punish political interference in the justice systems in the region.

According to sources, the US is expected to take other punitive decisions against Albanian politicians involved in these schemes. This is a strong signal of the influence that continues to be exerted on justice in the country and of the consequences expected to follow for those who violate the rule of law.

Even the Head of the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), Altin Dumani, has expressed concern about the voice of the corrupt in the system.

"The biggest concern is not the dismissed subjects, but those who have gone through this process and continue to exercise their functions. Our focus and this part of the prosecutors. There are premises that can commit corrupt acts. We have a duty to prosecute.'

In this key moment for the fight against corruption, which until now has been amnestied by corruption in justice, the evaluation of Altin Duman by the United States takes on a special importance

The meetings and US support for Duman emphasize the importance of a coordinated international approach to address corruption at the highest levels and to ensure that justice is at the service of citizens./ Alfapress.al
