Bad weather sweeps New Zealand, mass evacuations from torrential rains

Torrential rains that have lashed parts of New Zealand for the fourth day in a row have forced hundreds of people from their homes after rivers burst their banks. Nelson, off the coast of the South Island, was hit hardest by the bad weather and more than 400 people were evacuated after the area was declared uninhabitable due to the weather conditions.
"The devastation I saw in Nelson was terrible and I think it will take years for this part to recover," said Alec Louverdis, coordinator of the Civil Defense team in Nelson. He said that there are large landslides in this area.
Meteorologists said Nelson had faced 172 millimeters of rain since Tuesday, double the average rainfall that usually falls in August. Also, on Saturday, August 20, Nelson is expected to face rain storms.
Nelson residents have been advised to conserve water due to problems with the city's water supply system. Civil protection services have warned citizens to stay away from the coast, because on some beaches the sea waves are reaching a height of up to 3 meters.
The New Zealand Defense Force is assisting with evacuations and flood prevention. New Zealand has been dealing with unsettled weather for weeks. Experts say that the rainstorms were caused by an atmospheric current that hit the country.
Torrential rains have also lashed New Zealand's North Island over the past 24 hours, knocking out power in several towns and flooding homes. Residents are also being evacuated from this island.
Rainy weather in New Zealand is expected to reign until late Friday.
