Who will command in Hormuz? Iran reaches deal with Oman,

Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on the geographical coordinates for a sea route through the Strait of Hormuz and a joint announcement is being finalized, provided that third parties do not interfere, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday.

Baghaei added that any such agreement between Iran and Oman would not, in itself, guarantee security in the strategic waterway.

The proposed deal between Iran and Oman would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters on Wednesday, in one of the biggest concessions yet to Iran.

Despite the apparent step towards capitulating to Iranian demands, the sources disputed claims by US President Donald Trump that a deal to reopen the strait was imminent, saying important details still needed to be agreed.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the proposed agreement constitutes a new model, rather than a continuation of the system used for the last 60 years, taking into account current conditions, the security situation around Iran, and future agreements governing the Strait of Hormuz.

Under the proposed agreement, a northern Iranian route, located near Larak Island, and a southern route in Oman's internal waters would be closed temporarily.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the negotiations between Tehran and Muscat as "professional" and "a move forward," saying that "the two sides had reached a mutual understanding on the geographical parameters of the route under discussion."

Baghaei added that, unless some third parties hinder the process, the joint statement between the two countries, containing the main considerations and key points of understanding, was in the final stages of review and drafting.
