The film with the lowest profits in history: It didn't even reach 30 euros

The fact that James Cameron's "Avatar" is the highest-grossing film in history and "Paranormal Activity" the most profitable is known to most movie fans.

But there is a record that few people know about and which, although it hides a fraud, remains surreal. It is the worst-grossing film of all time, “Zyzzyx Road,” which was watched by a total of only six people, bringing in $30.

“Zyzzyx Road” became famous for these incredible numbers, but there is an important detail that partially explains the situation: The production staff had to meet a specific Screen Actors Guild rule in order to be able to broadcast the film overseas.

So, they chose to rent a small, dark movie theater and screen it exclusively there. Surprisingly, however, only six viewers were in their seats during the screening days.

Paradoxically, the fact that it stood out because of this negative record worked positively for its subsequent course. Many cinematographers began to talk about it as a modern myth, a film that undoubtedly should have been terrible and that would remain in history for its meager harvest.

This particular reputation led to the film making far more money through DVD sales than it did upon its initial release. Of course, the venture never managed to turn a profit, as its budget had only reached around $1.2 million. As expected, “Zyzzyx Road” is not currently available on any streaming platform.

The film was directed by John Penney in 2006 and, to the surprise of many, featured familiar names in the main cast, such as Katherine Heigl (“Grey's Anatomy”) and Tom Sizemore (“Saving Private Ryan”). Critics of the time received it with particular harshness, reinforcing the view that it was not a worthy work.
