New strategic partnership, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney: We welcome the EU's ambition for a closer alliance

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has told the European Parliament that a closer alliance between Canada and the European Union would serve as an inspiring example for other democracies around the world.

During his speech, the Canadian prime minister stressed that in the face of current challenges and geopolitical divisions, countries must find new dimensions of cooperation. He emphasized expanding human ties, including the opportunity for young people to study, live and work freely on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

This statement follows a proposal made by EU leaders, expressing the willingness to create a space for Canada to establish even closer partnership relations with the European bloc. For his part, Prime Minister Carney welcomed this approach, while Canada's attention is directed towards diversifying trade and creating new strategic alliances.

The initiative also comes at a time of trade tensions and tough tariffs imposed by the United States administration and President Donald Trump, who have warned of retaliation if plans for closer integration between Canada and Europe move forward. The concrete details and steps of this alliance are expected to be discussed at the next summit to be held in Montreal in late October.

The speech in Brussels was also accompanied by unexpected moments, when Carney was interrupted by an ironic chant from the hall with the slogan "USA, USA!", which was met with reactions of dissatisfaction from the rest of the audience, before the prime minister continued his speech focused on strengthening Canada's international position.
