Rama in Brussels is forced to boast about justice: We put an end to impunity, now we must face it ourselves!

Prime Minister Edi Rama said during his speech at the media conference following the conclusion of the Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference on IBAR and the launch of the process of closing the group chapters for negotiations in the Union, that the country currently has a more independent judiciary thanks to the reform carried out and has cracked down on impunity.
The head of government committed to Albania continuing its reforms and fulfilling its tasks in this difficult challenge, expressing his conviction to Commissioner Marta Kos that they would succeed in ensuring that the country joins the EU as promised, before the end of her term.
"We know that it is not the end, it is only the beginning of the end, we know that we need to do more work. It is time to tell the Albanians who have followed IBAR with such passion, as I said before in the hall, the word IBAR has become more trendy. This is how we experience the EU. We started with the stigma of a country that had impunity and now we have achieved the blow of impunity. Now we have a more independent judiciary. Our administration is capable as the work it does with the commission shows, the European journey is irreversible", the prime minister said, among other things, in his speech.
"Today we received confirmation, much stronger institutions than 10 years ago. A justice institution that is independent like never before. Year after year we increased investments and the economy in Albania. There was a culture of impunity. Our European journey is irreversible, all of this is the foundation for the rest, for better salaries, for greater investments," said the head of the executive.
He also described it as a major last challenge before Albania joins the EU and underlined that "we are ready to face it."
Rama expressed his conviction that Albania would join before Marta Kos finished her mandate as commissioner.
"It is the biggest challenge we have faced, we know, we recognize its magnitude and we are ready to face it, I say this without any attempt to flatter ourselves. Having the EU on your side means you can do it and we will do it, I feel it, together with our team, and I am very convinced that Marta will not give up on this, before the end of her mandate which coincides with the last time that Albania will be outside this house. We are encouraged and happy", he said.
Rama also thanked the EU Ambassador to Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, whom he said "brings good and bad news from the EU" and that this would be the last intergovernmental conference for him as a diplomat representing the Union in Albania.
"I also thank Silvio (Gonzato) because he has been the spokesman for both good and bad news, but also because it is his last intergovernmental conference as a representative. I have brought you a little sunshine here," said the prime minister, also making jokes about the weather.
The meeting, which began around 7:00 PM, lasted a little over 60 minutes before Prime Minister Rama, Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos, and Deputy Minister for the Integration of Cyprus, Marilena Raouna, addressed a press conference.
The intergovernmental conference follows the decision adopted by the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States of the European Union (COREPER), which confirms the fulfillment of the Interim Conditions in the “Fundamentals” Chapter Group, and sets out the Conditions for the Closure of the negotiations for Chapter 23 “Judiciary and Fundamental Rights” and Chapter 24 “Justice, Freedom and Security”.
