Italian anti-mafia raises alarm: Don't underestimate Albanians, they have

From “ La Repubblica ”/ The Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Bari District is sounding a strong alarm regarding the spread and influence of the Albanian mafia in Europe, a phenomenon that according to the DDA coordinator, Giuseppe Gatti, “has been partially underestimated.” However, investigations (the latest being the murder of a 26-year-old Italian hairdresser in Barletta) show a widespread and dangerous phenomenon.

This mafia is characterized as extremely violent and highly structured, based on a strong family structure and respect for archaic codes, but also economically strong because it  "has taken a leading role in international drug trafficking, interacting with more important mafia organizations."

The hairdresser's murder arose in the context of drug trafficking, from an initial argument with the leader of the Albanian clan Igli Kamberi over an unpaid debt of 500 euros. But the murder was ordered after the Barletta resident had disrespected the Albanian, questioning his word.

“This shows the danger of these organizations,”  explained prosecutor Roberto Rossi,  “which have a rigid model of behavior, in which there is no room for other ways of acting and in which violent actions become demonstrative, to send a signal to the community.”  This is the logic of the Kanun, Gatti continued, the ancient customary code of Albanian tribes, which today forms the framework on which the rules of criminal groups are built.

“Those who moved to Italy were previously settled in their respective territories thanks to bloody hostilities,” says the deputy prosecutor, “and then exported their mafia roots.” In our country, it was long thought that Albanians were low-level criminals, mainly dedicated to aiding illegal immigration or exploiting prostitution, but reality paints a different picture,”  the Italian anti-mafia explained.

In this reality, members of the Albanian mafia occupied vast areas of land and managed illegal trafficking in other countries. In Barletta, investigations showed that Igli Kamberi managed drug trafficking operations worth multi-million dollars and sent the profits home. In two operations (one at the Murriqani border in Montenegro and one in Italy), €680,000 and €400,000 were seized.

DIA investigators interpret this phenomenon of cash remittances as linked to the need to transfer cash to Albania, where it is easier to reinvest, as explained by Giulio Leo, commander of the DIA of Bari. Among the characteristics of the Albanian mafia, Gatti also highlighted the “extraordinary relationship with technology”, which allows it to manage drug trafficking, but also to reinvest the proceeds.
