Syria finds remnants of Bashar al-Assad's secret chemical weapons program

Syria's transitional leadership has found remnants of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's secret chemical weapons program, including raw materials and munitions suspected of being used in attacks during the civil war, Syria's representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Mohammed Katoob, told Reuters on Monday.

According to his statements, 18 people suspected of involvement in the chemical weapons program were arrested, among them senior military, political and technical officials of the former regime.

As Katub stated in the interview, materials used to produce sarin, a nerve gas suspected of being used in attacks during the Syrian war, were also found.

He stated that more than 70 missiles and aerial bombs that were used or intended for chemical weapons were seized.

Katoob added that among those arrested were senior military officials from the structures of the former regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian Transitional Authority has not released additional details about the operation and the investigation is ongoing.
