"Vlora, concrete and propaganda"/ Former Mayor Zilja: A city that seems to have contracted cholera...is being destroyed!
A bitter reality hides behind the government's propaganda for the tourist transformation of the south of the country.
The coastal city of Vlora is facing massive depopulation and daily abandonment by its residents, turning into an area that no longer produces anything, but is kept alive only by concrete facades.
Invited to 'A Show', on Syri TV moderated by Adi Krasta, Gëzim Zilja, former mayor of Vlora, said that the city's history has been stripped away and essential industries, including fishing and processing, have been closed.
Zilja also views with concern the transfer of important institutions, such as courts and education directorates, to other neighboring regions.
The former local official also focused on the departure of locals, who according to him are being replaced mainly by Italian citizens who choose to live there, but this does not change the fact that the most elite and intellectual part of the city has been forced to leave forever.
Two main factors are holding back the resurgence of what was once known as the "free and direct spirit," according to Zilja: extreme poverty and high political pressure in the workplace.
This has meant, he emphasized, that employment opportunities have been limited only to state institutions such as the municipality or prefecture, while creating an extreme dependency, where any kind of resistance or opposition voice is immediately suppressed.
The case of the protests for the protection of the Narta forest best reflects this climate of fear. Participation remains minimal, not from a lack of will, said the former mayor of Vlora, but from the fear of collective punishment that is implemented by dismissals from work for family members of the protesters.
The truth is that Vlora is abandoned every day, every hour, every second, every minute. Why? It is a city that produces nothing. It is a city that has had everything taken away from it. There is only concrete, concrete and propaganda. From the historical signs that it had, such as the Flag, to the small processing industries that it had, including all the light industries, including fishing, and other small industries that were here, they no longer exist.
So this city is a city, God forbid, but I think that at the same time it is forgotten by God. The figures show very well that this is a city, forgive me for saying this, but it is a city as if cholera had struck in the Middle Ages, once upon a time. That is, people are leaving, leaving and leaving without end. Italians mainly come who live here, but they spend the money they have.
Everything is politicized. Here, people can only get a job in the prefecture, in the municipality and in some other institution. And the biggest surprise is the difficulty that the historical side has made, such as the Flag or other symbols that Vlora had, what is very strange is that they are taking away all the institutions. From the education directorate, the courts, and others. That is, the directorate or institutions that Vlora had have been transferred to Fier. That is, from this point of view, Vlora is being deserted.
I think, I have a lot to say in this regard, but I think it is a certain policy that Vlora be abandoned. I don't know what will be populated with, because this is a city blessed by God. I see it every day when I get up in the morning, my house is very close to the sea and I open my eyes and take 20 steps, and wow, it seems to me that I am seeing that beauty for the first time. Vlora is so beautiful, blessed by God.
In Vlora, those who cannot leave have remained. What were they, the elites of the intelligentsia, people with a soul who loved Vlora with all their heart, who gave their lives for Vlora... they have left. Because their life here after '97 became unbearable. After '97, you heard sophisticated language, intrigue, and the majority of them, the best, the most beloved, the most educated, left. Those people I said cannot leave have remained here. This and the crazy propaganda that the Socialist Party is doing in this city. This is a very big advantage for them.
Here the mayor is elected with 11 thousand votes. You guess who is left in this city. From this point of view, progressive forces are absent here. Now, in my opinion, that great spirit of Vlora has been hit so hard that it seems to me that it has fallen to its knees. I don't know how it will rise, how it will be done, how this work will continue. And the reason is poverty and abandonment. The first is poverty. There is a proverbial poverty here. Forget what they say then, these people also say things that are demagoguery... If here people speak... here people speak like in the Middle Ages, they speak in the sense of removing the father from his job, removing the brother, removing the grandson, removing him and you are finished.
