Only Trump's signature is expected, the Senate officially confirms Eric Wendt as ambassador to Albania

There is a new “sheriff” at the American Embassy in Albania. He is Eric P. Wendt, who received the green light from the United States Senate, paving the way for a diplomatic mandate that is expected to have a strong focus on regional security and the strategic partnership between Washington and Tirana.

Wendt's candidacy was approved in plenary session with 50 votes in favor and 44 against, concluding the confirmation process in the Senate. Now only the formal signature of the President of the United States remains to make his appointment as head of the American diplomatic mission in Albania official.

Eric P. Wendt comes to this position with a long military career and a profile built on American special operations. He has served in the United States Army since 1986 and, since 1991, has been part of the elite "Green Berets" forces.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Wendt was involved in some of the most important US military missions, leading operations in Indonesia, the Philippines, Iraq and Afghanistan. Throughout his career, he has also held senior leadership positions, including the position of principal military assistant to the US Secretary of Defense, while commanding special forces structures at all levels.

His experience also extends to security diplomacy. In 2017, Wendt was appointed United States Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority, a position of high responsibility in one of the world's most sensitive regions.

He speaks Arabic and Korean and has been decorated with some of the most prestigious US and international military awards. His appointment in Tirana is seen as an important signal of Washington's continued interest in Albania, a key NATO ally in the Balkans, at a time when regional security and geopolitical challenges remain at the center of the transatlantic agenda.
