Rexhep Selimi found guilty by the Hague tribunal, sentenced to 13 years in prison

After more than five years since his arrest, Rexhep Selimi has been found guilty by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers panel, reports Telegrafi.
Although throughout the lengthy court process, Selimi had said that he had fought for Kosovo to be free and did not regret a single day he had spent on the war fronts, and even if the country were at war today, he would be fighting, the jury, headed by Charles Smith III, found him guilty and sentenced him to 13 years in prison.
Selim's arrest took place in November 2020, while the trial began in April 2023.
Rexhep Selimi was transferred to custody in The Hague in November 2020. Throughout the process, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The indictment includes war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The prosecution in this process said that during the 1998–1999 war period, murders, persecution, imprisonment/detention, torture and other acts were committed against various persons.
So, from the beginning of the trial to the conclusion of the evidentiary proceedings, more than two and a half years have passed. The prosecution closed its presentation on April 15, 2025.
Six counts of crimes against humanity – Persecution, imprisonment, other inhumane acts, torture, unlawful killing, enforced disappearance of persons.
Four charges of war crimes – unlawful or arbitrary arrest and detention, cruel treatment, torture, unlawful killing.
The Special Court has found today, September 16, 2026, that there were no war crimes after June 20, 1999. Thus, charges of crimes against humanity have been dropped for each of the KLA four.
The closing statements were held in February 2026.
After the conclusion of evidence on 18 December 2025, the parties submitted their final submissions and closing statements were held 9–18 February 2026.
