Haiti on the verge of historic qualification? Caribbean island close to World

Haitian fans have every reason to dream. The Haitian national team is close to a historic return to the World Cup, after a sensational 1-0 victory over Costa Rica, the quarter-finalists of 2014, on Thursday night.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be held in an expanded format of 48 teams, gives smaller national teams more opportunities to make history.

For Haiti, a qualification would be the first since 1974, when the country's only participation ended with three group stage losses.

The decisive goal was scored in the 44th minute by AEK Athens striker Frantzdy Pierrot, sealing one of the most important victories in Haitian football history.

After this success, Haiti is tied on points with Honduras, the group leader, keeping alive its hopes for first place in the CONCACAF qualifiers.

The road to the World Cup remains difficult, however. Haiti must play its final match away to already eliminated Nicaragua, while Honduras faces Costa Rica.

But the psychological momentum is on the Haitians' side. A victory in Nicaragua could increase the pressure on Honduras and open the door for Haiti to qualify directly or through the play-offs.

As the country continues to struggle to recover from decades of challenges, including the devastating 2010 earthquake that claimed an estimated 160,000 lives, football remains a source of pride and hope.

A participation in the World Cup would be not only a sporting achievement, but also a moment of unity for a nation with a rich culture and indomitable spirit.
