Trump welcomes Xi Jinping! The Chinese president seeks partnership between the two powers and control of strategic rivalry

Chinese President Xi Jinping (read Shi Jingpin) has begun a state visit to the United States of America, at the invitation of his American counterpart, Donald Trump.

Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on the afternoon of September 23, local time, by special plane.

At Andrews Air Force Base, he and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were welcomed by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

The reception ceremony was held with full state honors. Children presented flowers to the Chinese couple, while a guard of honor stood on either side of the red carpet.

The military band played the national anthems of the two countries, while 21 honorary gunshots were fired.

Trump described the visit as an event of international importance and expressed his expectation for in-depth talks with the Chinese president.

In his speech, Xi Jinping conveyed the greetings of the Chinese people to the American people and emphasized the importance of relations between the two countries.

According to the Chinese president, China and the United States should be partners, not rivals. He said both sides should put cooperation at the center of their relationship, while competition and disputes should be kept under control.

Xi Jinping (read Shi Jingpin) also stressed that China's development does not conflict with the American goal of "Making America Great Again", underlining that the two countries can achieve beneficial results for both peoples and the world.

While President Trump said:

"This is a visit that is attracting the attention of the whole world. President Xi is a great leader and this is a great moment. I look forward to having an in-depth exchange of views with President Xi, promoting the development of relations between the two countries."

During the visit, the two leaders are expected to discuss issues of bilateral relations and international developments.

Xi Jinping's visit comes a few months after his meeting with Donald Trump in Beijing in May.

The exchange of state visits between the two leaders within six months is seen as a significant development in Sino-US relations.
