WhatsApp scam message, Cyber Security shows how to avoid the

Starting from a news that circulated a few days ago in the news, where a message that came on WhatsApp for help that if it happened, would win a scholarship through a competition has caused some reactions. In recent days, Albania has been part of cyber attacks on several levels, related to the news of the interference in SPAK's emails, or the danger that threatens the DPI device.

According to an analysis published by the Cyber Security Authority and the Cyber Analysis Directorate, a new campaign called phishing has begun circulating in Albania through the WhatsApp platform, affecting a large number of users.

"This phenomenon has caused concern as WhatsApp users are exposed to a scam that aims to take advantage of trust between close contacts and a lack of knowledge about cybersecurity threats," the analysis says.

According to the analysis, it is all based on a scam message, which invites the recipient to vote on a platform. The message is about a girl in a "competition" for school scholarships. After the user gives the verification code, they lose their account. According to the analysis, it is advisable to avoid clicking.

"The scam scenario is simple: a message sent by a known WhatsApp contact invites the user to vote for a girl in a fictitious "competition" for school scholarships. The message contains a fake URL that looks like a voting platform. After the victim clicks on the link, they are redirected to a fraudulent page that asks for their phone number and access to their WhatsApp account via an 8-digit verification code. If the user authorizes the use of the code on their account, malicious actors gain full access to WhatsApp and can use the account to spread the phishing campaign further, as well as to steal sensitive data. This scam has affected a significant number of citizens and has caused the loss of control of their WhatsApp accounts. Security experts advise users to be careful and not to click on suspicious links, including those sent by known contacts, as they may be infected with malware or phishing - the analysis further states." - the analysis further states.

On the other hand, the analysis also explains how to disconnect from unauthorized access based on the device each user has. According to the analysis, everyone who is threatened by this cyber attack has a way to deactivate it.

"To identify unauthorized logins, you should go to Settings > Linked devices (refer to the current language of your mobile device). If you have unauthorized devices linked to your WhatsApp, deactivate them. At the end of the analysis, an explanation is given of how people should be protected when such a threat may occur and when they can recover passwords. Citizens, according to the analysis, should connect to Google Drive or iCloud." - the analysis continues.
On the other hand, the analysis suggests that any affected citizen notify related users to avoid this message that comes to their phone.

"For citizens who have become part of this scheme, it is recommended that they immediately regain control over their WhatsApp account by following official recovery procedures and change the passwords of other linked accounts, such as Google Drive or iCloud. It is also important to notify their contacts of the compromise and avoid further distribution of the message," the analysis concludes.
