EU approves €6.1 billion package for Ukraine, European leaders land in Kiev

Kiev has returned to the European spotlight today, as a group of leaders have arrived in the Ukrainian capital to participate in ceremonies marking the country's 35th anniversary of independence.
European Council President Antonio Costa and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham were among the officials who arrived in Kiev today, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibikha announced.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and Estonian President Alar Karis also traveled to the Ukrainian capital. Sibikha posted photos of the delegations' arrival at the train station in Kiev on social media.
The visit of European leaders takes place at a tense moment for Ukraine, as Russian attacks on its territory continue.
On the same day, the European Union announced a new €6.1 billion package to strengthen Ukraine's defenses. The funds will be used to supply air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars.
According to the EU, this amount is in addition to around 16 billion euros in military aid previously approved for Ukraine, of which 8.35 billion euros have already been disbursed.
"As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are taking action to help Ukraine protect its people and its skies. Europe stands with Ukraine and we will provide it with what it needs, when it needs it," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The leaders' arrival in Kiev and the new EU financial package are seen as another signal of Europe's political and military support for Ukraine, at a time when the war with Russia has been going on for more than four years.
