Brussels threatens Poland with legal action for rejecting Migration Pact

The European Commission has toughened its stance towards Poland and warned of legal action if Warsaw refuses to implement the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which is expected to enter into force in 2026.
"Once adopted, EU law is binding on all member states," a Commission spokesperson said, stressing that any non-compliance would be met with tough measures.
This stance marks a clear turn from recent weeks, when EU officials were more cautious in their stances.
Commissioner Magnus Brunner had initially avoided commenting on a possible lawsuit against Poland, praising its commitment to issues of security and migrant returns.
However, the Polish government, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, has made it clear that it will not accept the relocation mechanism for asylum seekers.
"Poland will not accept any additional burden," Tusk declared, citing the huge pressure from Ukrainian migrants and instrumentalized flows from Belarus.
If Warsaw does not implement the pact, the EU could launch an infringement process, which could end up in the European Court of Justice with daily fines against Poland, as has happened in the past.
