Four people died in Brazil in a fire that broke out today at a homeless center, local authorities announced, expressing suspicion that it was a criminal act.
The tragedy occurred overnight at a social center in São José dos Campos, in São Paulo. Of the 22 people sleeping there, four died and eight were injured, the São Paulo State Security Secretariat said.
Police have arrested and are questioning a 42-year-old man suspected of arson.
"A witness saw the suspect set fire to a sofa and then leave," the Secretariat said, without providing further details about the perpetrator's motives.
"The fact that the initial investigation shows that this was a criminal act adds to our pain and thirst for justice," the religious organization that manages the dormitory commented on Instagram.
