Austria bans mobile phones in schools

Mobile phones will be banned in Austrian schools, Austrian Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr announced today.

"While schools have previously created their own rules around phones, the new national regulation marked a change in approach," said Wiederkehr, arguing that "this would better support the work of teachers and school leaders."

"The known health risks of excessive phone use and changes in social behavior in schools require action. Person-to-person contact should replace screen time during school breaks," he stressed.

The new measure will also bring changes for parents.

"Some parents want to be in constant contact with their children during school hours. Phones are concentration killers," he stressed.

An expert from the Medical University of Vienna said that "excessive use causes irritability and sleep disorders as well as depression and compulsive behavior."
