WHO: Albania, first for unmet dental needs

Albanian citizens do not meet their basic dental needs, and this is evidenced in a WHO report that links this fact to the cost that citizens incur for this service.
According to the report, Albania ranks first in Europe for the high percentage of people who have not met their dental needs. The percentage of people over the age of 16 who report an unmet need for dental care ranges from 0.1% in Malta to 15.6% in Albania. Our country is followed by Greece, with approximately 12%.
The report highlights that cost is the main reason for unmet need in all European countries, except Finland and Slovenia, where waiting time is the main reason.
According to dentists, this is also reflected in the service required by citizens who are helped by remittances and those who live on a minimum wage.
"The income that immigrants bring has also supported the service for their families in Albania, except for those who have a good job, a business that can pretty much cover this service. While the rest that are luxury, orthopedics, surgery, implantology are another standard that only those who have financial means do. Immigrants who come from abroad have high aesthetic demands, and want the highest quality service," said Hydajet Ponari, a dentist.
According to specialists, although there has been a high demand for dental care in recent years, basic services for the majority of the population should be covered by the state, as is being done with children.
"At least our state, which is trying with programs in schools, prophylaxis, hygiene, awareness education to preserve teeth, check-ups at the dentist, even fillings that are somewhat more economical, should be covered by the state since they do not have a very high cost," said Hydajet Ponari, a dentist.
Levels of unmet need for dental care tend to be higher among people in poor areas./ Tv Klan
