Greece under investigation for human rights violations in treatment of migrants

Greece is facing increasing pressure and criticism from international human rights organizations after the tragic sinking of a migrant boat in 2023 off its southern coast, where hundreds of people lost their lives.

The European Union's border protection agency, Frontex, has announced that it is investigating 12 serious incidents of suspected violations of migrant rights, most of which occurred during 2024.

Frontex spokesman Chris Borowski said the Fundamental Rights Office is actively investigating these cases and that the agency has increased its complaint reporting mechanisms. According to him, each incident is being treated with special attention.

Meanwhile, the European Court of Human Rights in a January ruling described Greece’s practice of summary deportations, or “holidays,” as systematic. The Greek government has consistently denied the allegations, stressing that its coast guard has rescued over 250,000 migrants and that its actions are in line with international law.
