Canada exempts producers in specific sectors from tariff duel with US

Canada is expected to exempt car manufacturers and manufacturers in certain sectors that are affected by retaliatory tariffs, provided they meet certain criteria, the country's finance ministry has announced.

Manufacturers operating in Canada will be allowed to import a certain number of cars assembled in the US and that comply with free trade agreements, as long as they continue to produce locally and make planned investments.

"Our retaliatory tariffs will not be applied if they continue to produce, employ and invest in Canada," Prime Minister Mark Carney said today.

"If they don't do this, they will face 25% tariffs on what they import into Canada."

Canada has imposed a series of retaliatory tariffs on the United States in response to tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on steel, aluminum, cars and car parts.
But some companies have said the retaliatory measures could be harmful.
