For the first time since 2017, deadly bird flu outbreak in the US

The United States reported its first outbreak of the deadly H7N9 bird flu on a poultry farm since 2017, as the country continues to grapple with another strain of bird flu that has infected humans and sent egg prices to record highs.

The spread of bird flu has devastated flocks around the world, disrupting supplies and driving up food prices.

Its spread to mammals, including dairy cows in the US, has raised concerns among governments about the risk of a new pandemic, Reuters writes.

The strain that has caused the most damage to poultry in recent years and the death of one person in the US is H5N1.

However, H7N9 turned out to have a much higher mortality rate, killing nearly 40% of the people it infected after it was first identified in 2013, according to the World Health Organization.

The most recent outbreak of H7N9 was detected on a farm with 47,654 commercial poultry in Noxeby, Mississippi, the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health said in a report released today, citing US authorities.

"Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N9 of the North American wild bird lineage was detected on a commercial poultry farm," the report said, adding that appropriate measures are being taken in cooperation with local authorities.
