Turkey's arms exports increase, country ranks 11th in the world

Global arms exports from Turkey increased from 0.8 percent in 2015-2019 to 1.7 percent in 2020-24, marking a huge change of 103 percent, according to the report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
Turkey ranks as the world's 11th largest arms exporter as of 2024, according to a SIPRI report published on March 10.
The United Arab Emirates is the largest market for Turkish arms exports with 18 percent, followed by Pakistan with 10 percent and Qatar with 9.9 percent.
Spain was the largest arms supplier to Turkey with a share of 34 percent in the country's total arms imports. Italy and Germany were the second and third largest suppliers with 24 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
The United States consolidated its position as the world's leading arms exporter, accounting for 43 percent of global exports. France accounted for 9.6 percent, according to SIPRI.
European arms imports overall rose by 155 percent between the same periods, as countries responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and uncertainty over the future of US foreign policy.
NATO countries in Europe doubled their arms imports in the last five years, more than 60 percent of which were purchases of US armaments.
“The new arms transfer figures clearly reflect the rearmament that is taking place among states in Europe in response to the threat from Russia,” said Mathew George, programme director with the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme.
Ukraine became the world's largest importer of major weapons in the period 2020–24, with its imports increasing almost 100-fold compared to 2015–19.
At least 35 countries sent weapons to Ukraine after Russia's full invasion in 2022, and significant additional shipments are on the horizon. Ukraine received 8.8 percent of global arms imports in 2020-2024.
The majority of major weapons supplied to Ukraine came from the US (45 percent), followed by Germany (12 percent) and Poland (11 percent).
India was the world's second-largest arms importer, with its imports reflecting perceived threats from both China and Pakistan. However, its imports decreased by 9.3 percent between 2015–19 and 2020–24.
