Patients with 'Hashimoto' thyroid disease increase, Covid exploded

7% of the world's population suffers from Hashimoto's, an autoimmune thyroid disease. Europe ranks second after Africa in the highest number of affected cases.

There are no exact figures regarding the incidence of Hashimoto's in Albania, but doctors are noticing an explosion of cases following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Endocrinologist Florian Toti explains why women are more affected by thyroid diseases than men.

Hashimoto's is an inherited disease. People who have family members with this disorder should have periodic checkups to catch the disease early.

Florina Toti says that a Hashimoto patient leads a normal life, but is also predisposed to being affected by other autoimmune diseases.

Hashimoto's is a more basic autoimmune disease, where the body no longer recognizes the thyroid as part of itself and produces antibodies to destroy it.
