French court ruling could spell trouble for Le Pen's 2027 presidential bid

A recent ruling by France's Constitutional Court has fueled speculation about the possibility of Marine Le Pen running in the 2027 presidential election.

The decision relates to the dismissal of a former local representative from the island of Mayotte, found guilty of embezzlement of public funds.

Rachadi Saindou's lawyers argued that he should not be removed from office until the appeal was completed, but the court rejected this request, allowing his dismissal before the end of the legal process.

Legal experts suggest the case could have implications for Le Pen, who is on trial for her involvement in an alleged scheme to embezzle EU funds by her party, the Rally National.

Meanwhile, a verdict for Le Pen is expected to be announced on Monday, with prosecutors seeking a five-year ban on her candidacy for France's next presidential election in 2027.

Such a decision would block Le Pen's ability to compete in these elections.
