Germany, Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland and Sweden demand reduction of future long-term EU budget

Six European Union countries have stepped up pressure to cut the bloc's next long-term budget for the period 2028-2034. Germany, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden have asked the Irish presidency of the EU Council to reduce the new proposal by "several hundred billion euros." 

The six countries are net contributors to the EU budget and argue that the figure proposed by the European Commission of 2 trillion euros is too high and cannot be afforded by the countries bearing the financial burden.

In a letter dated September 28, the leaders of the six countries asked Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin to determine the total size of the budget before allocating funds to sectors. They also rejected the previous proposal for a 2% cut, which they considered insufficient. According to them, the European Commission has proposed a nominal increase of 60%, while all member states are trying to consolidate finances and limit spending.

In addition to reducing the total amount, the six countries are demanding a change in spending priorities. They want more funds to be directed towards security and defense, competitiveness, innovation, and the fight against irregular migration, while funds for traditional policies, such as cohesion and agriculture, should be reviewed. 

The letter also criticizes the plan to increase the number of employees in European institutions, arguing that it is not compatible with the austerity measures that national administrations are undertaking.

Ireland is expected to present a new compromise text in the coming days, ahead of the EU leaders' summit on October 15 and 16. 

Negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework have entered a critical phase, as member states aim to reach an agreement on the 2028-2034 budget by the end of the year.
