Kosovo's President without a name, term ends on October 6; PDK demands amendment to the Special Law first

Political parties have not found any candidates nor have they reached an agreement on the election of a new president, with only seven days left until the end of the constitutional term.

After a meeting between Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, the latter said that in order to discuss the president, the draft law amending the law on Specialized Chambers must first be approved, an initiative initiated by his party.

But, the Vetëvendosje Movement and its partners say that when it comes to electing the president, there needs to be a consensus among political parties and increased attention to legal changes following the decision of the Special Court against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

"We are dealing with tight deadlines, we are dealing with pressure, but I repeat, the common denominator in the interest of the Republic is not going to the elections," said Minister of Trade, Mimoza Kusari.

From the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the issue of electing the president is a matter of political will, while they demand that the amendments to the law on Special Elections be completed before October 6.

"For the Democratic Party of Kosovo, no topic is more important than the law at this moment. The issue of the president is a matter of consensus and political will," said PDK MP Arian Tahiri.

The Constitutional Court, in a decision issued last week, clarified that the deadline for electing a new president of Kosovo ends on October 6. If a president is not elected within this deadline, the country will go to extraordinary elections, for the fourth time in less than two years.
