The more normal and not at all revolutionary relations between the DP and the SP
Although Sali Berisha and the Democratic Party have tried to create a revolutionary and conflictual narrative in relation to the Socialist Party and Edi Rama, in reality, the relations between the two main political forces in Albania are more than normal and institutional, and this is a good thing. All of Berisha's rhetoric, accompanied by protests that warn of the end of the government every time they take place, does not correspond at all to the political reality. This public narrative is created only with the idea of manipulating the militants of the Democratic Party and creating a reality that does not exist. The fact is that Edi Rama will not leave either through revolution or protests, but only through votes and elections. This time too, the Democratic Party will go to the elections with Edi Rama as Prime Minister and there will be neither a technical government nor revolutions that are promised in the protests that have now turned into statistics.
In this sense, the rhetoric and de facto behavior of the Democratic Party in relation to the majority in government do not resemble each other at all, creating a political incoherence that most likely creates more confusion among its militants than trust. The most recent case of this incoherence is the voting of the parliamentary resolution together with the Socialist Party for the integration of Albania into the European Union. On the one hand, the Democratic Party thinks that Albania with Edi Rama does not deserve integration into the EU, on the other hand, it votes on a resolution to this effect together with Edi Rama.
But this is not the only case where there is an incoherence between the narrative that Berisha has raised in relation to Rama and his actual behavior and the Democratic Party. The opposition and the majority are cooperating institutionally to carry out the Administrative-Territorial Reform, and have even undertaken a joint tour throughout Albania for this purpose, and it is very good that this is so. They are also cooperating on the Electoral Reform. In all likelihood, judging by the public statements, they may also cooperate on constitutional reforms for the number of deputies or even on the Justice Reform. They even found an agreement on the parliamentary regulation and it will be voted on in parliament today.
So, in fact, the spirit that exists between the SP and the DP is a cooperative spirit and not at all conflictual, and even more so revolutionary. This is a good thing in the interest of Albania because cooperation between the opposition and the majority should be such, institutional and within the normal democratic competition.
The revolutionary spirit that Sali Berisha seeks to convey to his militants does not match political reality. It is done only for internal purposes, and the fact is that no one now believes that this government will be overthrown by protests or imaginary revolutions. The problem is that this incoherence of attitudes and behaviors makes the political strategy of the Democratic Party unclear and its action unbelievable in the eyes of Albanian citizens. The institutional behavior of the Democratic Party would be a completely normal behavior if it were not for its rhetoric that goes against it. It is a good thing that the opposition cooperates with the majority for certain reforms and the interest of Albania, but the revolution does not exist, much less the overthrow of the government through it. It is simply a means of communication to justify the successive lost battles of Sali Berisha since he returned to the head of the Democratic Party. The goal is to create the idea of a conflictual and not at all normal political situation and relations with the majority, because the losses of the battles must be considered as such to be justified. Otherwise, accountability would be normal, just like Berisha's relations with this majority and Edi Rama./ *This article is part of the "PRODEMOCRATIA" project, a partnership between the PASHKO INSTITUTE and MAPO Media, to analyze the developments of Albanian democracy
