Serbia reacts to Sudan's recognition of Kosovo

The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its concern following Sudan's decision to recognize Kosovo's independence.

As Danas reports, the Serbian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that this decision was made in circumstances of "insecurity and lack of legitimacy of power" in Sudan, underlining that such a situation does not allow a government to make important decisions on international relations.

"This decision constitutes a serious violation of the principles of international law," the Ministry's statement said, which also emphasized that "the capacity of the current Government of Sudan to make decisions with a major impact on relations between states, especially on issues related to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of United Nations member states, is questionable."

Serbia has called on Sudanese authorities to reconsider this decision, stressing the "complexity and sensitivity of the situation".

The Serbian MFA, referring to previous UN Security Council resolutions, emphasizes that Sudan's recognition of Kosovo "not only contradicts international norms, but also undermines efforts for a peaceful and sustainable solution in the Balkans."

At the end of the reaction, Serbia also addressed an appeal to the international community, demanding respect for the principles of international law and support for dialogue as "the only sustainable solution to the Kosovo issue."

The recognitions from Kenya and Sudan come after a slowdown in Kosovo's recognitions in recent years. Before them, the last state to recognize it was Israel in 2021.

Sudan has now become the 119th country to recognize Kosovo, a decision that is expected to anger Serbia, which has been continuously fighting its neighbor's independence.

Serbia condemned Kenya's decision to recognize Kosovo and said it could also affect Belgrade's relations with the African country.
