History/ When the physics genius Max Planck begged Hitler to spare his son's life: Listen to an old beggar!

On July 20, 1944, a group of German conspirators, mostly military, attempted to assassinate Hitler.
The bombing failed and the retaliation was tremendous. Among the people involved in the incident, and among those sentenced to death, was the name of Erwin Planck, the son of Max Planck, the well-known German physicist, the father of quantum mechanics.
Planck tried to take advantage of the prestige he enjoyed in Germany to spare his son's life, and therefore wrote a letter personally to Hitler, begging him to reconsider his decision. However, his request was ignored and Erwin was executed by hanging on January 23, 1945. Here is the content of the letter:
"My Fuhrer!
I am deeply shocked by the message that my son Erwin has been sentenced to death by the people's court. The gratitude for my achievements in the service of our country, which you, my Fuhrer, have repeatedly and respectfully expressed to me, makes me confident that you will listen to an 87-year-old beggar.
In gratitude to the German people for my life's work, which has become the eternal intellectual property of Germany, I beg the life of my son" Max Plack
Hitler, as head of state, had the right to pardon, but in this case, he did not exercise it. Why? Hard to say, although Erwin was not directly involved in the plot. Maybe he wanted to show that the Law is one for everyone, although after 3 months he killed himself and Germany capitulated.
Planck had also lost another son in the First World War, and his memory, and especially his advanced age, forced him to humble himself. He died four years later in 1949, at the age of 90, with a life of success in science but very unfortunate in the personal life.
