It was much more than a footballing moment that evening in Belgrade, when chaos erupted during a Euro 2016 qualifier between Serbia and Albania. The “drone match” of October 2014 remains infamous, with the memory of Albanian players running towards the tunnel at Partizan Belgrade’s stadium, a dangerously blazing bonfire.
The incident sparked a diplomatic crisis, with Serbia immediately summoning the Albanian ambassador to discuss the chaos that erupted after a flag with a map of “Greater Albania” was lowered onto the pitch shortly before half-time. Blame was thrown in all directions, and the situation became an example of how sport can amplify old animosities in a harsh and far-reaching way.
Maybe it was just a dream… Last Tuesday, UEFA announced that Albania and Serbia will co-host the 2027 European Under-21 Championship, confirming a decision that was actually made last year, after Belgium and Turkey withdrew their bids. There is a sense of satisfaction within UEFA, given the obstacles that had to be overcome.
In fact, the bidding process may have been the easy part. In May last year, Albania was advised that a single bid would not be successful. Although the National Arena in Tirana, the region’s most modern stadium, had hosted the 2022 Conference League final, it would struggle to host the entire tournament.
Serbia’s unexpected presence in the project brought a solution and was encouraged by political figures who wanted to demonstrate rapprochement between the two countries, as well as by UEFA leaders who aim to use football as a bridge to overcome the insurmountable. In 2014, the two federations could not even agree on the sale of tickets for visiting fans; now they share responsibility for a major competition.
Not everyone is willing to forget
Megjithatë, jo të gjithë janë entuziastë për këtë bashkëpunim.
