Valdano: Mourinho won't be the one to solve all of Real Madrid's

Former Real Madrid player and coach Jorge Valdano stated on Thursday that Portuguese coach José Mourinho "will not be the one to solve all the problems" the club has and considered it necessary to have "a leadership revolution within the dressing room given what has been seen."

Valdano made this reflection on the possibility of Mourinho being the next coach of the white team during the presentation of the book '366 footballers of all time who have made history', the work of journalist Alfredo Relaño, held at the Ateneo in Madrid.

"Mourinho will not be the one to solve all of Real Madrid's problems. Players will have to be contracted in key positions. There should even be a revolution in leadership within the dressing room, given what we have seen," the television commentator argued.

When asked what advice he would give to a Real Madrid fan who was thinking of leaving the club if the Portuguese coach were to return, Valdano replied: "Wait a minute. I will continue to be a Real Madrid fan despite the disagreement. Wait, wait. There are good times, bad times and tragic times in life."

Regarding his favorites for this summer's World Cup, the former world champion with Argentina in 1986 predicted that the favorites are the Argentine team, Spain, France and Portugal.

"Spain, perhaps, in first place," Valdano emphasized, justifying this by saying that "there is always an advantage" given the quality of its midfielders.

However, to maintain this status as a favorite, he considered it necessary for Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to arrive in good shape after the physical problems they suffered.

"These are the players who add danger to the game, because otherwise Spain could die from a thousand touches, as happened in Qatar and Russia: talking to the ball and being left alone talking makes no sense. With these two guys at the European Championship, we have seen how the team's competitive possibilities change," he analyzed.

He stressed that Argentina "did not lose their hunger", having won two Copa Americas (2021 and 2024) and a World Cup (2022) in a row. For France, he stressed that "they took away Germany's credibility" and have shown that they reach World Cup finals "without any apparent effort", while for Portugal, he placed them among the candidates for victory because they have "very good midfielders".

Valdano did not consider it positive that the World Cup will be played by 48 teams, which will result in "more scandalous results than ever" and "more defensive tactics" in a context marked by high temperatures.

"That's why I give so many chances to Spain and to teams that control the game and know how to relax with the ball. Those who play with long balls will commit suicide," Valdano said.
