The German environmental organization "EuroNatur" said on Monday that it has sent a petition to the Munich City Council, requesting the withdrawal of support for the Vlora airport project in Albania.

The petition, according to the German environmental organization, which has been active in Albania for years, is expected to be reviewed tomorrow by the Munich municipal council.

The company that operates Munich Airport (Flughafen Munchen Gmbh) is in the role of a consulting company in the Vlora Airport project and the city of Munich is a 23 percent shareholder in Munich Airport.

According to a media statement from EuroNatur, the petition "calls on Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter to speak to the company's supervisory board in favor of withdrawing from consulting and management services for the planning and operation of Vlora airport, which is currently under construction."

EuroNatur executive director Gabriel Schwaderer says that "in addition to the Bern Convention, the European Parliament and the European Commission have strongly criticized the construction of Vlora airport in a European nature reserve."

"The City of Munich, the Free State of Bavaria and the Federal Republic of Germany must take appropriate action and withdraw completely from the project," says Mr. Schwaderer.

Construction work at Vlora airport near the Vjosa-Narte protected landscape in Albania is continuing despite calls from the Bern Convention to stop the construction and protests from environmental organizations.

According to official Albanian sources, representatives of Munich Airport recently held a meeting in Albania with officials of the Albanian Civil Airport.

During the meeting, according to official Albanian sources, not only were issues of certification of Vlora Airport discussed, which have already begun, but also the transition plan, staff recruitment and training, and the appointment of key management positions.

Vlora Airport covers an area of 297 hectares with an estimated investment value of around 100 million dollars. The runway is expected to be 3.2 kilometers long and the passenger terminal will have an area of 25 thousand square meters.

According to Albanian authorities, the airport's publication phase according to international standards will be completed in April of this year, under the supervision of the airport operator, which is Munich International Airport./ VOA
