Blake Lively wins in court, Baldon must pay her over $407,000

Blake Lively has won a court case against Justin Baldoni and his company, Wayfarer Studios, even though the amount awarded is far less than the actress had asked for. On August 26, federal judge Lewis J. Liman ordered Lively to pay $407,451.75 in legal fees and expenses. Of that amount, $363,245.40 is for attorneys' fees, while $44,206.35 represents other legal costs.

The actress initially sought more than $8 million, arguing that the expenses were incurred in defending herself against a defamation lawsuit filed by Baldoni and Wayfarer. The court rejected the entire claim. According to the ruling, only expenses that could be directly related to Lively's defense against the defamation charges could be reimbursed.

Liman did not find the hourly fees charged by Lively's legal team unreasonable, given the complexity and importance of the case. However, he significantly reduced the number of hours that could be included in the reimbursement. The court also excluded costs related to public relations and media coverage, arguing that they were not necessary expenses for the legal defense of the lawsuit.

Despite the reduced amount, Lively's team welcomed the decision, calling it an important precedent and a signal that lawsuits considered retaliatory can have financial consequences. On the other hand, Baldoni's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, interpreted the decision differently. He noted that Lively received only about 5% of the amount she initially sought and presented this as an outcome in his client's favor.

The legal battle between the two actors began after tensions flared during the production and promotion of the film “It Ends With Us.” Lively has accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and a smear campaign after concerns were raised. In June, a judge dismissed Baldoni’s defamation lawsuit, and earlier in May, Lively and Wayfarer reached a settlement for the remainder of the dispute.
