Ratko Mladic, the former commander of Bosnian Serb forces, sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, is expected to be given state honors in Serbia.
The news was announced by Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujic, who stated that Mladic will receive " all military and state honors " due to him as a general.
Mladic died at the age of 84 in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence. He was found guilty of a series of crimes committed during the Bosnian war, including the Srebrenica genocide, where more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed in July 1995, as well as crimes during the siege of Sarajevo.
The decision to award state honors has sparked strong reactions, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina. While in Serbia and Republika Srpska, some political figures and nationalist media have presented Mladic as a hero or victim of international justice, in Srebrenica it is emphasized that his death does not change responsibility for the crimes committed.
Milorad Dodik has described Mladic's death as "murder", while commemorative activities have also been held in Belgrade and Republika Srpska in honor of the former general.
Red Star Belgrade fans also displayed a banner honoring Mladic during a European match, sparking backlash and a complaint to UEFA.
Mladic was arrested and surrendered to the Hague Tribunal in 2011. In 2017, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, a decision that was confirmed on appeal in 2021.
Meanwhile, Serbia continues negotiations for membership in the European Union. The issue of glorification of convicted war criminals and denial of war crimes has been one of the concerns raised by European institutions towards Belgrade for years.
