Norway's King Harald V dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, the Royal Palace announced. He had been hospitalized for several days at Oslo University Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a bacterial infection in his blood.

Harald V has been at the helm of the Norwegian monarchy since 1991, when he succeeded his father, King Olav V, to the throne. During his more than three decades on the throne, he was noted for a modern approach to the monarchy and for his strong connection with Norwegian citizens.

News of the king's death comes after days of concern in Norway about his health.

On Thursday, the Royal Palace announced that his condition had become very serious, while close family members remained by his side in the hospital.

Harald V was born on February 21, 1937 and was 89 years old. With his death, the focus is also expected to be on the succession process to the throne, with Crown Prince Haakon first in line.
