Accused of corruption, President Trump pardons former governor Blagojevich

President Donald Trump on Monday pardoned former Illinois Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of corruption for trying to sell former President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat.
Rod Blagojevich was removed from office in 2009 after prosecutors said he tried to sell the Senate seat vacated by Mr Obama after he won the 2008 presidential election.
Speaking at the White House, where he signed the pardon, President Trump said Rod Blagojevich had experienced a "terrible injustice."
President Trump, during his first term, commuted the 14-year sentence of former Governor Blagojevich. Mr. Blagojevich had appeared on Mr. Trump's television show, "Celebrity Apprentice," in 2010 while awaiting trial.
The Supreme Court in 2018 rejected an appeal by Mr Blagojevich to further reduce his sentence, which was scheduled to end in 2026.
Rod Blagojevich has tried to portray himself as the victim of an excessive and politically motivated prosecution by federal law enforcement, an accusation that seemed to resonate with President Trump.
