Cyclone "Zelia" hits Western Australia

Powerful tropical cyclone Zelia, a Category 5, made landfall today, battering northern Western Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

Authorities warned of the "very devastating" consequences of the cyclone, which made landfall at 12:30 local time (04:30 GMT) near Port Hedland, about 13,000 kilometers northeast of Perth, on the state's north coast.

The BoM warned of strong winds, flooding and storm surge.

"The destructive core of the system, the area around the eye of the cyclone, is impacting the coast east of Port Hedland, bringing very strong winds of up to 290 kilometres per hour as well as heavy rainfall and flooding," Matthew Colopy from the BoM said at a press conference.

Colopy said Zelia was causing very heavy rainfall, adding that "totals are expected to reach 200-300 millimeters over the next 24 hours, with a total of up to 500 millimeters over three days."

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services had warned of a "potentially life-threatening weather event" as Zelia intensified into a Category 5 system.
