The United States is holding direct talks with Iran over its nuclear program. Trump said the two countries will hold a "major" meeting this Saturday about the nuclear program.
We recall that the two countries have severed diplomatic relations since 1979.
The American president held talks at the White House today with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where the issues of Iran, the Gaza Strip, Turkey, the presence of Syria, as well as tariffs were also discussed.
" We have direct talks with Iran - they have started and they will continue on Saturday. We will have a great meeting, we will see what can be done. I think everyone agrees that a deal would be preferable," Trump told reporters, adding that the alternative of a war " is not something that he would get involved with."
"Maybe a deal will be made, that would be really great," Trump said.
During his first term in office from 2017 to 2021, Trump withdrew the US from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, which imposed strict limits on Tehran's controversial nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump also reimposed broad US sanctions.
Since then, Iran has significantly exceeded the limits of that agreement on uranium enrichment.
Western powers accuse Iran of having a secret agenda to develop nuclear weapons capabilities by enriching uranium to a high level of fissile purity, beyond what is considered justifiable for a civilian atomic energy program.
Tehran says its nuclear program is entirely for civilian energy purposes.
