French MEP asks America to return the Statue of Liberty

"Give us back the Statue of Liberty," is the strange demand made by French socialist Raphael Glucksmann, according to whom Paris should take back the monument because the United States no longer represents the values that prompted France to make this gift.

"To the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, who fire researchers because they demand scientific freedom, we say: give us back the statue ," the MEP and founder of "Place Publique" stressed at a convention.

"We gave it to you, but you seem to despise it. So it will be fine here at home ," he added.

The Statue of Liberty was unveiled in New York City harbor on October 28, 1886, the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence as a gift from the people of France to America.

It was designed by the Frenchman Auguste Bartholdi.

Paris has a much smaller replica of the statue on a small island in Paris.

Glucksmann, a staunch defender of Ukraine, has sharply criticized President Donald Trump's radical shift in US policy on the war.

He also took aim at Trump's cuts to US research institutions, which have already prompted the French government to launch an initiative to attract some of them to work in France.

"The second thing we will say to the Americans is that if you want to lay off your best researchers, if you want to lay off all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and inquiry, have made your country a major world power, then we will welcome them ," he added.
